Ford merely allowed him to do it all again, wondering if it might play out differently this time. He has had this exact kind of awakening before Dr. The episode saves the grimmest revelation for last: Bernard-like the hosts who live within Westworld-has been on a loop all along. This is intimacy in the deepest sense-knowing a person so completely that you can reconstruct him after he is gone.Īnd then, with all that in mind, imagine what it takes Dr. Ford was thoughtful enough to notice the gesture, and perceptive enough to intuit the deeper meaning behind it. Ford brings Bernard to life for the first time, he immediately corrects the robot on the way he cleans his eyeglasses, explaining that Arnold used the affectation as a moment to collect his thoughts. Imagine the countless hours fussing over the tone of his skin, or the gleam in his eye, or the wrinkles on his hands. Ford to rebuild his departed friend from the ground up. Think about how much time and effort it would have taken for Dr. Ford, and what this creation can tell us about his character. These memories are designed to make us rethink everything we know about Bernard-but as each little revelation was parceled out, I couldn’t stop thinking about Dr. Ford in Arnold's image, after the real Arnold was killed-another notably sentimental flourish for a man who publicly prides himself on his ruthlessness.
Ford, inspired by Arnold's belief that tragedies offered the best foundation for a host. Bernard's tragic backstory was written by Dr. Ford's orders, Bernard attacked Elsie (who may or may not be dead). Like so many of Westworld's characters, Bernard's arc is built around the illusion of control.
