That said it looks like a new pinion gear is about 40 bucks + SH, or I can get a used one from ebay for under 30 shipped.

I will end up getting a new handwheel gear anyways (since its the cheap part thats beat up), but for the future, if it was YOUR machine and you wanted to turn as good of parts as you could with it, would you just install a new handwheel gear/shaft to the ebay apron as is, or would you try to bore the hole and fit a bearing/bushing into the casting to prevent the wear from happening in the future? Keep in mind I'll have a second casting thats trashed to "practice" onīut I need the damn lathe to turn down the pinion gear shaft! sure sucks when you can't use the tool you're fixing to fix itself.

So I'm guessing this is a pretty common problem. Now, there's a nicer apron on ebay right now I might get anyway depending on what it goes for, just to clean her up a bit, but the seller included the note that "hand wheel pinion bushing has been center-punched to snug-up". The lathe has had some damage to the handwheel at some point anyways and is 59 years old, so I expected this. Upon disassembly, found a lot of chips/crud in the flat toothed gear strip the handwheel gear moves on, wear on the handwheel gear shaft and in the cast iron bore in the apron. I have cleaned it up some and noticed a lot of slop (1/4" of movement at the end of the handwheel) in the handwheel hole in the apron.

Knew it needed some love when I agreed to buy it, was still a great deal (thanks BCF). Bought an old Atlas Lathe from member BCF on here.
